Grow a garden filled with Snapdragons, from freshly harvested Antirrhinum majus seeds. Tetra Mixed Snapdragons have been a garden favorite for hundreds of years. They establish easily in the garden when the weather is warm and create mounds of beautiful and colorful flowering plants. Tetra Mixed Snapdragon will produce flowers in pink, purple, red, yellow & white. They will grow to a mature height of about 18 to 24 inches tall and will make an excellent cut flower. Vase life can extend up to 10 days.
Grown as an annual plant in cooler regions, the Snapdragon “Tetra Mixture” will grow quickly, bloom heavily and die with the first frost. Seeds can be collected at the end of the season to regrow this beautiful flower next season. The seeds can also drop to the bare ground beneath and naturally reestablish as well. In warmer regions, many grow Tetra Mixed Snapdragon flowers as perennial flowering plants.
Sowing The Seed
Snapdragon seeds can be started indoors, or directly outdoors. If started indoors, we recommend to start in peat pots 6 to 8 weeks prior to the last frost, at a sowing depth of 1/16” under topsoil. When the weather outdoors is warm, you can transplant, or direct sow your Snapdragon flower seeds (or seedlings) into the garden.
First, prepare your sowing area by removing all unwanted plant life. Now you can begin prepping the area for your seeds, or transplanted seedlings. Turn the dirt, or place new soil in its place. Skater the seeds to the bare ground and thinly cover with 1/16” of topsoil. If transplanting see below for spacing.
Growing Conditions
Snapdragon flower seeds & plants will require an area of full sunlight for the majority of the day. They will also need temperatures of at least 70F to thrive. Provide a rich soil that is also well draining. In areas that consist of hard compacted soil, try mixing a fluffy compost to improve drainage. Water daily with a light mist setting so that the soil is kept moist, but never soaked.
Germination & Growth
Your seeds will begin to show signs of life within 7 to 14 days after sowing. The plants will grow to a mature height of about 18 to 24 inches tall and don’t mind being a little crowded. The plants can be spaced anywhere from 12 to 18 inches apart from one another.
